Choice Versus Obligation

We all have had or will have that time in our life when we just would rather curl up in a ball than “have” to be somewhere. We feel disconnected from the best of who we are.

I had a client who turned up not feeling the best.  She really just wanted to nice face life this day.

This client decided to “just turn up”…without expectation – but to just be there.

It got me thinking about the way in which make decisions and what our self-talk is.  I know that when we understand that we have a choice, well, that in itself makes an enormous difference, versus us thinking we “have” to do something.

When there is something schedule in the diary, we can think “I have to be there” or we can think “I choose to be there”.

“When you turn up, you get what you need” – Client Insight

My client didn’t feel like turning up. My client didn’t “have to” turn up. But my client “got an opportunity” to turn up to see what would happen.

Thinking in terms of “I get to” or “I choose to” rather than “I have to” changes our energy.  It moves the focus from “no choice” and a feeling of being trapped or obligation, to not just having a choice, but creating an opportunity. From being trapped to being curious. From obligation to adventure.

Take the pressure off – just turn up because you get to and see what happens. You might just get what you need (enter the Rolling Stones….).

Small shifts can make a big difference.
