I was talking to a client the other day who is a small business owner. She was saying she doesn’t usually get sick and she did recently. She was made to stop, and she gave herself permission to actually not do anything “productive”. She read, slept and relaxed.
She had gone through a lot over the last few years and kept “forging ahead”. She is a self-proclaimed “doer”. Smart as a whip. Extremely capable. Yet, as we talked it became clearer that she had become disconnected with the things that brought her true joy.
Sometimes we get so busy “doing” that we forget that life is happening now. That the joy in life is to be appreciated in the moment.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that a list of achievements is what life is all about. I am not saying don’t have goals – our brains love goals – something to aim for. I’m saying once you have set where you are headed to remember to come back and be present. Notice what is here now to appreciate. That is where the joy lives. We are human beings, not human “doings”. Be a human being. Stop and smell the roses now.
